What is a Non-Medical Masks or Face Coverings?

Face coverings are the talk of the town during these Covid times.

In simple terms, a face covering is something that covers the nose, mouth and chin.

What is a Face Covering?

A face covering can be anything which fits on the face and covers it completely, and generally speaking, it is a face mask made from cloth and is highly recommended.

An ideal face covering should perfectly fit the face and cover mouth, nose and chin while making breathing comfortable.

The World Health Organizations suggests a minimum of 3 layers in the face covering.

Both reusable and non reusable face coverings are available in the market.

Face coverings are disposable but can be used multiple times depending upon the type and quality.

Transmission of the Virus

Oral and nasal secretions from the mouth and nose, are the potential transmission sources of airborne infections during the Coronavirus pandemic.

As face coverings shield the mouth and nose, they are ideal in stopping Coronavirus transmission.

The purpose of face coverings is to protect surrounding people, and not the wearer from harmful and infectious biological agents, such as viruses and bacteria and dust, pollutants, and vapours.

Face coverings do not let oral and nasal secretions be released into the surrounding atmosphere.

Recommendations for Face Coverings

The World Health Organization has made it mandatory for face coverings in certain outdoor and indoor places Places where face coverings are obligatory include; Public transport (taxis, private taxis, buses, trams, trains and aeroplanes), shops, supermarkets and shopping centres that are open for large crowds of people, hospitals, schools, banks, bars, restaurants and cafes.

Face coverings can be avoided in places where social distancing is possible.

Who can Wear a Face Covering?

Some People are exempt from wearing face coverings- children under the age of 3, the elderly, those who are mentally impaired and those who are ill with restrictive breathing diseases.

How to Prevent Myself Against the Virus?

You should always wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol based sanitizer before wearing a face covering.

Avoid touching it on the side that comes in contact with your mouth and nose as it can lead to contamination.

Fix it on your face in a way that it covers and protects the mouth and nose completely.

While removing it, make sure to take it off from the side that faces outwards, fold it in a way that the side that faced your mouth and nose are on the inside of the fold.

If the face covering is washable and is intended for reuse, wash it after use..

Discard it if the face covering becomes damp,if it is taken off without following simple hygiene rules,or it is a single use mask.

You must wash your hands after taking it off as well.

Cloth face coverings contain the users infectious droplets and prevent them from spreading these to others.

A Face covering is a social responsibility.

It should be worn to protect you and others.

Face coverings are essential for both healthy people and those who are sick as no one knows who are non-symptomatic and could be a carrier (healthy or without symptoms) and could pass the virus to others.
