    Frequently Asked Questions

Who manufactures face masks in the UK?

Bristol Mask is the only Surgical mask Manufacturer in the South West. There are very few like us in the UK.

What are the 3 layers of a surgical mask?

Surgical Masks are made with an inner and outer layer of Spunbond material and a middle layer of meltblown, a very special type of material used as a filter.

How do you define a surgical mask?

A Surgical mask is a disposable version used to limit and prevent the spread of germs, viruses and bacteria coming from the mouth, and any respiratory diseases carried by liquid droplets and aerosol particles.

Which is the correct side of a surgical mask?

The front side of the mask is usually coloured and the white side is next to your skin. The nose bridge/ nose wire must be worn on the top of your nose and pinched to shape.

What material is used to make surgical masks?

Surgical masks are made of polypropylene, known as plastic (100% recyclable) and a nose bridge with or without metal.

When should I wear a face-covering during the COVID-19 pandemic?

As recommended by WHO and the UK Government, to prevent the disease, a face covering must be worn in all enclosed spaces where it is too difficult to maintain social distancing.

Do face masks help prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Surgical Face Masks help to prevent the wearer from catching viruses from coughs, sneezes and when speaking to others.

    Who invented surgical masks?

The first record we found was in 1897 when a French Surgeon, Paul Berger, used a piece of fabric to cover his face to prevent cross-infection during an operation.

I haven't found the masks 100% effective as my glasses have steamed up on several occasions. This accounts for my 4 star rating.

    Not Great Quality

I can see how these should work to prevent your glasses steaming up but they’re pretty poor. In addition the ear loops break and the mask itself feels very thin. Not impressed with the quality

    Hello Yvonne!

We are sorry that the earloops from the order you received was easily broken. During
production there can defect manufacture. Please provide us with a photo of the lot number at the back of the box and the faulty mask, so we can investigate to send you a
    replacement.

In relation to the thin quality of our mask. Our mask are certified with international standard (EN14683:2019 at Type IIR). This is the highest standard which can be tested on surgical mask.

One of the requirement for EN14683:2019 Type IIR standard is the breathability, which must be under <60 Pa/cm2. This means that the face mask material must be having a good breathabilty for the person who wear the face mask. High breathability doesn't means that it would be lower the protection on the face mask. It is the feature of our mask to have a high breathabiltiy as well the protection (BFE, Bacteria Filtration Efficency at 99.9%). Type IIR also includes a requirement on splash resistancy, which our mask do passed the test to be certified on this standard.

A good face mask should be made with material letting adequate air flow passing together with protection from virus, poor material maybe can also block the virus but most likely also blocks air flow to make you difficult to breath (for example a printing paper).

    A little disappointed

I purchased a box of 50 pcs Securfit Glasses Wearers masks to avoid misting up glasses. Unfortunately they still misted up. One mask only had a loop attachment on one side and delivery was very slow. Despite these problems they are still usable but no better than others I have purchased at half the price.

    Hello Dawn!
We are so sorry that you are experiencing misting with your glasses wearer mask and defective loop with a mask.

We want you to have the best experience with Bristol Mask. To ensure you get the best experience as a glasses wearer it is very important that you get the face mask to have a good fit on your face. I suggest that you give the masks a good pinch around the nose, knot & tuck your mask and it will give a tight face fit and reduce steaming. I also suggest you to watch this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzTAZDsNBe.
She is explaining very well.. Most glasses wearers find this helpful.

During production there can be defective manufacture. If you experience any more defective loops please let us know at customerservice@bristolmask.uk
